In the Greek New Testament, there is a unique word that appears almost exclusively in the book of Acts: Homothumadon. It is often translated as “in one accord.” More than just simple agreement, it describes a group of people moving with one mind, one heart, and one singular passion.

The most famous instance of praying in one accord occurred just before Pentecost. Acts 1:14 tells us that the apostles, along with the women and the brothers of Jesus, “all joined together constantly in prayer.”
They weren’t just in the same room; they were in one accord. This unity was the prerequisite for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2. When the Church unites in prayer, the “atmosphere” changes, making way for:
- Spiritual Authority: The power to witness with boldness.
- Supernatural Provision: The meeting of every physical and spiritual need.
- Multiplied Impact: One person can chase a thousand, but two can put ten thousand to flight (Deuteronomy 32:30).
Jesus’ Ultimate Request: “That They May Be One”
The practice of praying in one accord isn’t just an apostolic tradition; it was the final, burning desire of Jesus before He went to the cross. In His High Priestly Prayer, Jesus petitioned the Father specifically for our unity:
“I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.” — John 17:20-21
Jesus practiced unity by constantly aligning His will with the Father’s (John 5:19). He understood that the world would only believe the Gospel when they saw the visible, undeniable unity of His followers. One Accord is our greatest witness to a fractured world.
What Happens When We Unite?
When we lay down our individual agendas to pray with one voice, several things happen in the spiritual realm:
- Agreement Releases Power: Jesus promised in Matthew 18:19 that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by His Father in heaven.
- Barriers Are Broken: Corporate prayer has the power to break chains that individual prayer sometimes cannot, much like the church praying together for Peter’s release from prison (Acts 12:5).
- Revival Is Ignited: History shows that every great move of God—from the Azusa Street Revival to the gatherings at Hopefest LA—was preceded by a small group of people praying in one accord.
